The Pécs masters of the visual arts: István Bencsik’s exhibition(s)

2010 November 3.

With the new exhibition of HattyúHáz Galéria, Pécs, we have a chance to gain an overview, more complete than ever before, of the career of István Bencsik, an oeuvre that may be multifarious but is eminently coherent throughout. (See also the artist’s exhibition at Pécsi Galéria, Blow-up.)

The core of the exhibition is Rita Varga’s diagram, which attempts to visualize important moments, places and relations in the master’s work in a single chart, from the beginnings to the present.

There are also documents, films, interviews and interview performances with Bencsik on display, as well as the artworks of students/fellow artists/friends, which provide a context for the display.

What with the limitations of the available space, every student of Bencsik cannot be present, so the exhibit concentrates on those whose work shows an influence of the master’s outlook and spirit. Interestingly, several works are presented in a medium other than the original (documentation, photo, video).
